Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, has formally appealed to the municipal authorities of Lugano, Switzerland, urging the prompt restoration of the stolen statue honoring Satoshi Nakamoto. The petition advocating for the statue’s reinstatement has garnered over a thousand signatures. This statue, originally installed in Lugano’s Ciani Park as a tribute to Bitcoin’s enigmatic creator, was stolen on August 3rd but was fortunately recovered from the nearby lake later that same evening.
Unveiled on October 25, 2024, at Lugano’s Ciani Park (Villa Ciani), the statue was intended to commemorate the anonymous founder of Bitcoin. The event, organized under the Plan B initiative in collaboration with the city of Lugano, featured a work of art crafted by Italian sculptor Valentina Picuzzi, who dedicated eighteen months to research and three months to the actual sculpting process.
Ardoino emphasized that the theft represents not only a cultural loss but also undermines the global recognition of Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. He has called upon Lugano’s administration to expedite the statue’s restoration to safeguard this historically and symbolically significant monument.
Tether’s serious response to this incident underscores the importance placed on cultural and historical values within the cryptocurrency community. Given Lugano’s status as a prominent hub for cryptocurrency, such incidents risk tarnishing the city’s reputation. Consequently, local authorities are being urged to implement robust measures ensuring the security and preservation of the statue moving forward.
