Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has announced that the Ethereum Foundation will enter a “moderate rigour” phase over the next five years. This initiative aims to achieve two key objectives: maintaining Ethereum as a high-performance, scalable “world computer” without compromising resilience, sustainability, or decentralization, and ensuring the Foundation’s long-term viability to protect its core mission. Buterin explained that under this plan, he will personally take on responsibilities previously managed through the Foundation’s “special projects.” The focus will be on supporting an open, verifiable, and fully transparent software and hardware technology stack that safeguards both private and public environments. This vision encompasses fields such as finance, communications, governance, blockchain, operating systems, secure hardware, and biotechnology, emphasizing privacy, decentralization, and local-first software architecture. To support these goals, Buterin has withdrawn 16,384 Ethereum (ETH), which he intends to invest gradually over the coming years. He is also seeking more secure and decentralized staking solutions to utilize staking rewards for long-term mission support. Highlighting the importance of full-stack openness and verification, Buterin stated that the Ethereum Foundation will focus on core Ethereum development aimed not at “Ethereum everywhere” but rather “Ethereum for those who need it most,” prioritizing autonomy, security, and privacy over centralized commercial interests. He further noted that as global power dynamics intensify, this approach offers a balanced alternative: a collaborative infrastructure that is genuinely open, verifiable, and serves its users.
