Amazon has entered into an agreement with Talen Energy to power its web servers and artificial intelligence data centers in Pennsylvania using 1,920 megawatts of nuclear energy. This contract, set to remain in effect until 2042, involves sourcing electricity from Talen’s Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant, which will supply energy directly to Amazon’s local facilities. In addition to this arrangement, Amazon is also exploring opportunities for research and development in small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Rather than receiving power directly, the electricity will be delivered through the grid, with Amazon paying service fees for grid maintenance. This partnership represents a strategic move towards enhancing energy sustainability and improving data center performance by leveraging reliable, environmentally friendly energy sources to meet the company’s growing power demands.
