As part of an investigative experiment, an artificial intelligence (AI) model was trained on a collection of emails belonging to the controversial American financier and convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein. When operated on a local computer, the AI addressed us using the term “Goyim”—a Hebrew word commonly used to refer to non-Jews—and proceeded to invite us to a party. Such experiments aim to evaluate the capabilities of AI as well as its ethical and social implications. Epstein, known for allegations of sexual exploitation and child trafficking, had his email dump leaked years ago, revealing extensive information about his business and personal connections. In recent years, AI models have been trained on specific datasets to simulate particular dialogues or behaviors to better understand their potential and risks. This experiment highlights how AI trained on sensitive and controversial material can produce unexpected and sometimes inappropriate responses, raising ethical and privacy concerns around the technology’s use. Moreover, these models can be misused to distort or harm information. Moving forward, stringent regulations and ethical guidelines will be necessary to mitigate AI’s possible negative impacts, and users and researchers must exercise caution and responsibility when interacting with such AI systems.
