Ransom attacks are expected to increase significantly in 2025, with a 75% rise in reported incidents compared to last year. According to Chen Ketcher, 72 confirmed attacks have occurred so far, causing economic losses exceeding $40.9 million, which is 44% higher than the previous year. Experts warn that the actual damage may be greater due to underreporting and confidential settlements. These criminal attacks involve physical violence or threats to coerce victims, particularly cryptocurrency holders, into surrendering valuable information or assets. Europe has emerged as the most affected region, accounting for over 40% of global incidents, with France reporting the highest number of ransom attacks, followed by Austria and the United Arab Emirates. The severity of these attacks has also escalated, especially personal assaults, which have increased by 250%. Targeting cryptocurrency traders and their families, these attacks sometimes include kidnappings. The growing popularity and decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies make them an easy target for criminals, as tracking and recovering such assets is challenging. Experts caution that ransom attacks may continue to rise, especially amid market volatility and weak legal protections. Users are advised to enhance their security and exercise extra caution in safeguarding sensitive information. Governments and international bodies must also strengthen laws and cooperation to prevent such crimes.
