Ripple Plans XRPL Enhancements Inspired by Solana’s Strategy

Select Language

Luke Judges, Ripple’s Head of Global Partnerships, emphasized that the XRP Ledger (XRPL) should learn from Solana’s strategies to maintain its competitive edge amid the rapidly evolving Layer 1 blockchain landscape. He attributed Solana’s success to practical engineering and swift implementation rather than protocol design alone. Judges shared that he has operated validator nodes worth over $30 million on Solana’s network and observed that rational thinking and speed are critical for Layer 1 network success, beyond purely technical theories. While acknowledging XRPL’s progress in smart contracts and programmability, he stressed the need to align technical improvements with clear market strategies to build genuine competitive strength.

Conversely, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz offered a differing view, highlighting XRPL’s greatest strength as its reliable, stable, and institutional-grade performance, which he argued surpasses chains that sacrifice stability for speed. Schwartz noted that XRPL’s consistency and high availability make it more suitable for real-world financial applications. Judges also underscored the importance of developer tools, documentation, onboarding processes, and incentives for validators, warning that risks such as network centralization must be managed for sustainable Layer 1 growth. He cited the recent decline in Solana’s validator count as a cautionary example for XRPL.

Overall, Judges advocated for XRPL to focus on enhancing the developer experience, accelerating technology deployment, and adopting performance practices from competing chains while preserving its stability. He clarified that these strategic adjustments are not criticisms of XRPL but necessary steps to remain competitive in the future blockchain ecosystem.
